ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES

Morgan Bowers, Director

Administrative professionals serve as the backbone of the senator’s office, supporting all aspects of their work, allowing him or her to be efficient and effective.

  • Provide secretarial duties, including formatting letters and data entry
  • Greet visitors and answer phones in a welcoming manner
  • Maintain senator’s schedule
  • Act as liaison with state departments to resolve constituent issues
  • Willingness to learn other software used in senators’ offices

CAUCUS SERVICES/OUTREACH

Melissa Kurtz, Director

Caucus Services team members work behind the scenes to help the senator reach key constituent groups.

  • Think strategically and creatively and be highly organized
  • Cooperate with other caucus and support offices to fulfill tasks required for producing outreach events
  • Assist with research and special projects as required
  • Knowledge of, or interest in learning, desktop publishing
  • Some travel may be required

COMPUTER SERVICES/IT

Shawn Eyster, Director

Looking for individuals who are ready to jump in and learn new technologies in a continuously evolving IT environment.

  • Positions include hardware technicians, systems administrators and help desk
  • Work collaboratively to develop and maintain a comprehensive IT program
  • Adaptable to learn technologies to benefit end users
  • Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, various software and hardware, including but not  
    limited to mobile devices, desktops, Microsoft Cloud, WAN and LAN networks
  • Self-motivated and willing to work independently and in a team environment

COMMUNICATIONS

Greg Milligan, Director

The Communications Office uses tools and talents to amplify the message of the individual members and the Senate Republican Caucus, both through the media and directly to the public.

  Communications Coordinator

  • Prepare news releases, remarks, e-newsletters, newsletters, social media copy.
  • Assist member offices with media planning.
  • Serve as point person for member offices when working with Communications office.

  Digital Media

  • Design static and motion graphics for social media and websites
  • Maintain and update more than 60 websites: news releases, livestreams, video, photos
  • Design and distribute e-newsletters for members

  Photography

  • Take photos in Capitol of committees, news conferences, events and tour groups
  • Travel statewide to photograph member events in their districts
  • Edit and print photos for use on social media, web, media, and to provide to guests

  Print Graphics

  • Design and layout printed materials for mailing by members including newsletters
  • Design and layout printed materials for member offices, including but not limited to signage, maps, brochures and flyers.
  • Produce specialty items upon request, such as posters and plaques

  Video

  • Shoot, edit and encode video
  • Travel statewide to cover hearings, news conferences and member events
  • Knowledge of video and editing equipment, livestream technology is crucial

POLICY DEVELOPMENT & RESEARCH

Geri Sarfert, Director

Research analysts dig in and get to the heart of the issues facing the people of Pennsylvania.

  • Develop and advance policy initiatives of the Republican caucus and members
  • Attend policy briefings and committee meeting and provide written summaries
  • Willingness to learn the legislative process
  • Able to work independently and in a cooperative team environment
  • Possess a fundamental understanding of research and analytical principles, concepts and techniques
  • Meticulous attention to detail a must

BUDGET ANALYST

 Our budget analysts play a crucial role in the negotiation process and the development of the commonwealth’s budget.

  • Responsible for monitoring and oversight of agency budgets, budget analysis and the development of funding recommendations for primary assignment areas.
  • Research budgetary, legislative, programmatic, and fiscal matters at the direction of the Senate Appropriations Committee chair, executive director, or assistant executive director.
  • Respond to inquiries or requests for information from senators and staff.
  • Review legislation referred to the Senate Appropriations Committee related to primary assignment area and prepare fiscal notes and amendments.

CONSTITUENT RELATIONS

This role requires a boots-on-the-ground problem solver who gives constituents their first impression of the senator.

  • Respond to written and oral constituent inquiries in an efficient, customer-service manner.
  • Represent or accompany the senator at various public functions.
  • Willingness to learn the basics of the legislative process.
  • Identify and make recommendations to senators and staff on key issues of concern to constituents.
  • Utilize caucus resources to determine appropriate grant programs for local projects.

LEGISLATIVE

Legislative assistants and directors act as the eyes and ears of the senator for legislative issues.

  • Exhibit a working knowledge of the legislative process, rules and procedures of the PA Senate.
  • Advise senator on all legislative areas
  • Research issues and draft legislation, amendments, co-sponsorship memos and floor remarks as needed
  • Attend committee meetings with or on behalf of the senator
  • Review co-sponsorship memos for the senator’s consideration
  • Attend meetings with constituents and interest groups with or on behalf of the senator
  • Handle legislative inquiries from the district office staff
