Mastriano Bill Would Honor Korean War Veterans

HARRISBURG – Legislation introduced by Sen. Doug Mastriano (R-33) would officially recognize July 27 as “Korean War Armistice Day” in Pennsylvania.

Days honoring veterans of the Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War and Global War on Terrorism already exist. Mastriano’s bill would place “Korean War Armistice Day” within Title 38 (Holidays and Observances) alongside them.

“The Korean War has been overshadowed in history, labeled the ‘Forgotten War.’ But we must never forget the extraordinary bravery, sacrifice and heroism of those who fought to defend freedom on the Korean Peninsula and halt the spread of communism,” Mastriano said.

In the Korean War (1950-53), 36,000 American servicemembers lost their lives, including 2,401 Pennsylvanians. More than 92,000 were wounded, and more than 8,000 were declared missing in action, leaving their families without closure. Tens of thousands endured the brutal hardships of freezing winters, relentless enemy assaults and grueling combat in unforgiving terrain.

“Despite these hardships, their sacrifice ensured that South Korea remained free, sparing millions from the horrors of totalitarian rule. Today, South Korea stands as a thriving democracy and an economic powerhouse, a testament to the valor of those who fought for its survival,” Mastriano said.

The bill would give Korean War veterans the recognition they deserve but few received and preserve freedom’s legacy. It would also help future generations understand their sacrifice. Establishing this day would help schools, communities and civic organizations remember and honor those who served.

“The Korean War was not just a battle for territory, it was a battle for freedom. We owe it to those who fought and died to assure that their legacy is never forgotten,” Mastriano said.
