HARRISBURG – Legislation that would increase penalties on illegal street racing was approved today by the Senate Transportation Committee, according to one of the bill’s sponsors, Sen. Devlin Robinson (R-37).
“Our reality is not a movie set,” Robinson said. “The reckless behavior of individuals driving erratically and at dangerously high speeds on roads and bridges poses a grave threat to the safety of my constituents who rely on these routes every day. With nearly 20,000 high-speed related crashes recorded in Pennsylvania – including 2,700 in Allegheny County alone – during the past few years, it’s imperative that we take decisive action to stop this risky trend.”
Senate Bill 998 – nicknamed the “Putting the Brakes on Street Racing” legislation – proposes a significant increase in fines from $250 to $2,000 per infraction. The bill also aims to enforce accountability on event organizers, recognizing that many participants record their stunts to post on social media.
The bill is part of the Senate Republican effort to improve community safety across Pennsylvania. It now heads to the full Senate for consideration.
