HARRISBURG – The Senate Appropriations Committee today approved two energy-related bills sponsored by Sen. Gene Yaw (R-23), chairman of the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee.
“Each of the bills approved today represent significant steps in ensuring energy reliability, sustainability and affordability for Pennsylvania families and businesses,” Yaw said.
Senate Bill 186 would repeal the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) carbon tax enacted through executive order by the Wolf Administration in 2019. RGGI, a multi-state compact, would increase electricity rates for consumers, cut energy and manufacturing jobs and lead to the closure of Pennsylvania power plants.
Additionally, the committee approved Senate Bill 187 to create an Independent Energy Office (IEO) in Pennsylvania. The IEO would be modeled after Pennsylvania’s Independent Fiscal Office (IFO), which was created by Act 120 of 2010, and Act 100 of 2016. The IFO does not support or oppose any policy it analyzes, and discloses the methodologies, data sources and assumptions used in published reports and estimates.
“Pennsylvania has one of the most diverse energy portfolios in the United States,” Yaw continued. “I believe an Independent Energy Office can streamline our approach to responsible energy policy and ensure a more cohesive strategy for managing our vast natural resources.”
The bills now move to the full Senate for consideration.
